This document suggests how to manage the complex situation of stocking and selling car seats and travel systems. This is complex because:
1. Often; 1 travel system = 1 car seat + 1 buggy.
2. Retailers sometimes stock travel systems but need to break them up to sell individual components, or vice versa.
Q. When is a car seat not a car seat? A. When it’s a travel system! (OK, not so funny). Anyway, here is what we suggest you do.
If your supplier sells travel systems then stock these as a single article at say £170 with VAT code of 13.1%.

Also create articles for the components, a car seat (at say £100) with VAT code of 5% and a buggy (at say £100) with VAT code of 17.5%.
When stock arrives do a Goods In for the travel systems. Do not do a ‘goods in’ for the components, this stock count stays at 0.
At this point if the car seat and buggy components have separate barcodes add them to each specific article as you usually would in the ‘Supplier’ section.

Now go to the travel system article and add the car seat barcode to the travel system (supplier barcode).

Then add the buggy barcode to the travel system (into the product barcode).

If the travel system has a barcode remove this from the item, it’s not needed.

Selling a Travel System
Now, when a customer buys a travel system, the till operator scans one of the barcodes (eg. the barcode on the car seat). The Till will ask the operator if they want to sell a travel system for £170 or a car seat for £100. Of course they select travel system. No further action is needed, stock levels, prices and VAT are correct.

Selling a Component, e.g. Car Seat
When a customers buys a car seat, the till operator scans the barcode. The Till will ask the operator if they want to sell a travel system for £170 or a car seat for £100. This time they select car seat. The customer can leave the shop, an easy sale.
However you now have ‘-1’ stock of car seat and the same stock of travel system which is not correct.
So, do a ‘goods out’ for 1 travel system and a ‘goods in’ for 1 car seat and 1 buggy.
This allows you to split a travel system to sell individual components, it keeps stock levels correct, VAT codes correct and prices correct!
